How the date is set
- New Year is the first day of the first month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar: a new moon day.
- It always falls between January 21 and February 20.
- Usually it is the second new moon after the December solstice. 2034 is an exception: a leap 11th month in 2033 moves New Year from January 20 to February 19.
- The date is counted in China time, so the day can differ by one from a new moon date given in US time.
