In 2026 the shortest day in New York is December 21 and the longest is June 21. The earliest sunset (December 8) comes 13 days before the shortest day. Daylight saving time moves both sunrise and sunset one hour later on the clock from March 8, which is why the latest sunset is in summer time.

Terms

Sun height for golden hour (0 to 6 degrees above the horizon), civil, nautical and astronomical twilight (down to 18 degrees below) and night
Sunrise / sunset
The top edge of the sun on a flat sea-level horizon. Air bends the light, so the sun is really 0.83° below the horizon at that moment.
Golden hour
Sun less than 6° above the horizon: soft, warm light.
Civil twilight
Sun 0–6° below the horizon: still light enough to be outside without lamps.
Nautical twilight
6–12° below: the sea horizon is still visible.
Astronomical twilight
12–18° below: dark to the eye, but faint stars are still washed out.

Why the earliest sunset is not on the shortest day

Solar noon drifts later through December, so evenings start getting lighter about two weeks before the December solstice, while mornings keep getting darker until early January. The table above has the exact dates.

Times use NOAA's solar formulas for sea level, accurate to about a minute; hills and buildings can shift them.
